Hot Stone Massage in San Francisco, CA

Hot stone massage in San Francisco, CA uses smooth, heated basalt stones alongside hands-on massage strokes. The warmth helps muscle release more readily than pressure alone, which suits anyone who holds tension tightly or finds deep work uncomfortable. At Miss Still Massages in the Mission District, sessions are built around your body. Book a session or call 415-684-5881.

What Is Hot Stone Massage?

Smooth basalt stones are heated in water to a comfortable working temperature, then used in two ways: placed on the body to rest along the spine, shoulders or palms, and held in the hand as an extension of massage strokes.

Basalt is used because it holds heat evenly and releases it slowly. The stones are never applied straight from the heater, and temperature is checked against your skin before anything is placed.

Why Heat Changes the Work

Warmth makes tissue more pliable. Muscle that resists pressure when cold will often yield to considerably less pressure once it has been warmed.

That matters for two kinds of client. If you hold tension so tightly that deep tissue work is uncomfortable, heat gets you further with less discomfort. And if you have found that ordinary massage gives only surface relief, warmth allows the work to reach tissue that would otherwise stay guarded.

What Hot Stone Helps With

01

Chronic muscular tension that has not responded to pressure alone

02

Cold-weather stiffness through the shoulders, neck and lower back

03

Stress and difficulty settling — the warmth is genuinely calming

04

Sensitivity to deep pressure, where heat does some of the work instead

05

Poor circulation in the hands and feet

06

Sleep difficulty linked to physical tension

What a Session Involves

We start the same way as any session — you tell me what is going on, and I check where things actually are before deciding anything.

Stones are then introduced gradually. Some rest in place while I work elsewhere; others are held and used with oil in flowing strokes. The pressure available with a warm stone is different from hand pressure — broader and more even — and I adjust throughout based on what your tissue is doing.

Sessions run 60 or 90 minutes. Ninety is worth considering here, because the warming phase takes time and rushing it defeats the point.

Who Should Not Have Hot Stone

Heat is not right for everyone. Hot stone is not suitable during pregnancy, and I do not combine it with prenatal sessions.

It is also avoided with certain conditions — uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes with reduced sensation, active inflammation, open skin, recent injury, or any circulatory condition affecting how you perceive heat. Tell me about anything relevant when you book and I will advise honestly.
