Prenatal Massage in San Francisco, CA

Prenatal massage in San Francisco, CA uses supportive positioning and gentler, adapted techniques to ease the tension pregnancy places on the lower back, hips and legs. At Miss Still Massages in the Mission District, the room is prepared before you arrive. Hot stone sessions are also available. Book a session or read about my background.

What Is Prenatal Massage?

Prenatal massage is bodywork adapted for pregnancy. The pressure is closer to Swedish massage than deep tissue, and positioning changes as pregnancy progresses.

Rather than lying face-down, you are supported on your side with bolstering and cushions so you are comfortable and properly stable throughout.

What It Helps With

Pregnancy shifts posture, weight distribution and center of gravity, and the body compensates. Common areas of tension include:

01

Lower back discomfort as posture changes

02

Hip and glute tightness

03

Leg heaviness and tired calves

04

Neck and shoulder tension

05

General fatigue and difficulty relaxing

How the Session Is Adapted

01

Side-lying positioning with bolsters supporting the top leg, belly and arms, adjusted as you need.

02

Gentler pressure overall, with certain areas approached differently or avoided during pregnancy.

03

Shorter, adaptable timing — we can change position or pause whenever you want. Nothing about the session is fixed.

Tell me how far along you are when you book so the room is ready before you arrive.

Before You Book

If your pregnancy is being monitored for any reason, or you have been told to limit activity, check with your midwife or doctor first. Many providers are happy to advise, and I would rather you arrive with that confirmed.

Let me know about any complications, discomfort or changes since your last visit, each time.

Postpartum and Other Sessions

I also offer hot stone massage and Ortho-Bionomy as separate sessions. Neither is combined with prenatal work — heat is not appropriate during pregnancy, and Ortho-Bionomy is better kept as its own session.

If you are curious about either for after your pregnancy, mention it and we can plan ahead.

Postpartum, once you have been cleared to resume bodywork, sessions can return to whatever your body needs — often deep tissue through the shoulders and upper back, which take the strain of feeding and carrying.

Every session I offer is customized. If you are unsure what suits you right now, say so when you book and we will work it out together.
