Ortho-Bionomy in San Francisco, CA
Ortho-Bionomy in San Francisco, CA is gentle, non-forceful bodywork that works with the body's own self-correcting reflexes rather than pushing against them. It suits people who find deep pressure counterproductive, or whose tension returns whatever force is applied. Miss Still is currently training in Ortho-Bionomy at the Mission District studio. What Is Ortho-Bionomy?
Ortho-Bionomy was developed by osteopath Arthur Lincoln Pauls, drawing on the principle that the body will move toward correction on its own if it is given the right conditions.
Rather than stretching a tight muscle or forcing a joint toward where it should be, the practitioner moves the body into the pattern it is already holding — a position of comfort — then holds it there. Given that support, the nervous system often releases the pattern itself.
It looks like very little is happening. That is the point.
How It Differs From Massage
Most massage applies pressure to tissue. Ortho-Bionomy works with position and support, and much of it happens through clothing rather than with oil.
The other difference is force. There is none. No deep pressure, no thrust, no stretching into discomfort. If something hurts, we are not doing Ortho-Bionomy.
That makes it useful in situations where pressure has stopped helping — tension that returns within days, an area too sensitive to work directly, or a body that braces against being worked on.
What It Can Help With
Recurring tension that returns however much pressure is applied
Areas too tender for direct work
Joint discomfort and restricted movement
Bodies that brace or guard against pressure
Post-injury sensitivity, once cleared for bodywork
Chronic pain patterns where deep work aggravates rather than eases
An Honest Note on Training
I am currently a student of Ortho-Bionomy, not a certified practitioner, and I would rather say so plainly than imply otherwise.
What that means practically: I use Ortho-Bionomy principles within sessions where they suit what your body is doing, and I am open about where my training currently sits. If you want a fully certified Ortho-Bionomy practitioner, I will say so and help you find one.
Plenty of clients are interested precisely because the gentleness suits them. Others prefer to stay with myofascial release or Swedish work, which is entirely reasonable.
What a Session Involves
You stay clothed in something comfortable and loose. I assess how you are holding yourself, then support the body into positions of ease and wait.
Sessions are 60 or 90 minutes, and elements can be woven into a broader session rather than taken alone — often alongside myofascial release, which shares the same slow, unforced approach.
